Internal cultural training
Many organisations cross cultural boundaries. But even more have cultural differences within them. At JSA we work to bring people together. It is about knowing and appreciating differences whilst not ignoring the need for seeing our similarities as well.

Diversity training
Sometimes organisations we work with will not label their needs as ‘cross cultural'.

Instead they will want diversity training. We look at 3 areas;

  • having an open-minded attitude towards diversity,
  • knowledgeable about cultural differences and differences more generally between groups and can competently interact with people who are different.

Example of Cross cultural training content

Culture can be defined as ‘the collective programming of the mind which distinguishes the members of one group or society from those of another'- Geerdt Hofstede.

In fact Hofstede is still seen as one of the leaders in cross cultural work.

And at John Seymour Associates we have turned some of his key findings into practical tools.

For instance, there are 3 examples of culture related values:

Power distance (this relates to dynamics up and down the organisational ladder) e.g. in Malaysia , Mexico and India people except power distribution to be uneven. Whereas in the UK , Sweden , Finland , they expect a more consultative style of mangement to enable power distribution.

Individualism vs. collectivism e.g. people in Japan are more collective then people in the US .

Masculinity vs. femininity (refers to the distribution of roles between the sexes). This is important as it concerns people's values. E.g. Italy and Japan have a focus more on the male values of competition and assertion, whereas Denmark and South Korea tend to have a focus on the more caring women's values.

The questions for you are: What cultures do you need to know more about?

And when you know more, what will you do differently?

Education is part of the process, but behavioural and attitudinal change is what really makes a difference.

We can look at any country and the know the issues you will be facing, and how best to work through them.

For over 18 years John Seymour Associates
has delivered skills based training worldwide.
We understand how to build bridges and create long lasting cross-cultural relationships. We have even opened offices in Turkey and India ourselves.

We also know how to develop cross-cultural bonds within an organisation itself.

If you are looking for training for people being placed overseas, or to bring people together within your organisation, we can help. Call 0845 658 0654.
